Turbotax Trump Accounts
The AI Tax Team at Turbotax had a big experience to add to the Turbotax experience for the 2026 tax season and onwards: adding the ability to sign eligible dependents up for Trump Accounts as part of the tax filing experience in both the web and mobile applications.
As of April 2nd, 2026, it has already procured over 25+ million views and 1.2+ million customers signing their children up for accounts, including $310+ million dollars value to accounts for newborn children and those numbers are expected to more than double by the end of the tax season.
The Challenge
This was a completely new experience for Turbotax since Trump Accounts did not exist in prior years. The goal was to provide a quick and easy way for customers to sign up their eligible dependents for the new government-backed savings accounts. Children born in 2025 and onwards would also get an additional $1,000 credit to their account at no cost to the customer, which was something our team was encouraged by the US government to highlight.
My Role
As the product designer on the project, I worked with content designers as well as federal and legal stakeholders as well as upper leadership to produce this new experience on a tight timetable, since the requirements and paperwork of the Trump Accounts was still being changed up to the start of the 2026 tax season. I came up with multiple iterations of the design and worked closely with content to create a streamlined signup flow. Designs were then tested internally and with customers to ensure the best experience.
Trump Account Sign Up Happy Path
Many discussions were had over the ideal placement of the sign up happy path. Originally, we intended on the experience living with Other Tax Situations, but the demand from federal and our leadership stakeholders ended on the placement being that we would tease the experience when the qualifying dependent was created and during the Other Tax Situations Onramp, and then show them the full experience right before they finish and file their taxes.
For members that did not have children that qualifies for the $1k pilot program credit, but did have dependents that qualifies the account, the first time they saw anything to do with Trump Accounts was when they were finalizing their filing.
Multiple Children Experience
To account for multiple dependents that qualified for the account, a variant experience was created to streamline the flow while still accounting for each child the customer may or may not wish to sign up.
Full Experience Map
Over 40 unique pages were designed across the experience, accounting for different states of qualification and number of eligible dependents.
