USAA Storefront Webpages
USAA Modernization Effort
The Challenge
I am currently part of the greater Modernization Efforts here at USAA, where new pages are being developed to showcase a variety of services USAA has to offer. USAA's updated design system has been rolled out across 2024 and onwards, and features responsive designs that are more fitting for a modern website.
My Role
Working with business, legal, and content, I helped design several new and refreshed webpages for the USAA website. Designs were done in Sketch and invision, and then in more recent years, Figma, using both USAA's new and old design systems depending on page launch.
The Modernization Process
Competitive Analysis
The process would start with me as the designer conducting research, pulling example webpages from competitors and seeing what each one did or didn't do. This was then shared in Content Strategy Alignment Sessions with Business, Content, and Design (myself). We would speak through any desires Business wanted for the page, any requirements that were mandatory, and any concerns from Content or Design in regards to the page before the work was begun. Legal disclosures and any custom design needs are also discussed here.
Design (the fun part)
Once content was approved and provided, I would then design the page using the standards for the website using the current USAA design library. After reviews with Business and Content (which can take several rounds depending on content revisions with legal, business requests, etc), it would then be prepped for Foundation Review.
Information Architecture, Accessibility and Foundation Review
The pages would be prepped with an IA and accessibility markup then be sent to Foundation Review, which would catch any content updates or design issues that would need to be fixed.
Development
Once any issues with design or content were addressed, they were given an official stamp of approval and sent to our development team. If they needed any content updated on the designs, or had any development issues that needed design solutions, I would be brought in to help with those needs.
Information Architecture
Below is an example of what a typical information achitecture map would look like for a typical storefront webpage.
Modernization Workshop
During my time at USAA I organized and lead a modernation workshop where we helped identify reoccuring sections and components from the old versions of webpages (Tridion system), and then helped the USAA Reveille Team (in charge of the new Reveille design system) with designing out possible solves as well as leveraging and modifying existing assets to work for those use cases. The workshop was successful in starting and continuing discussions on what sections should be modernized and what would be best left retired.
